Use this guide to find out what type of insurance you have
There are many different types of health insurance. How you sign up for insurance can tell you a lot about what type of insurance you have.
I get health insurance through my job.
Option 1 – You (or a family member) are employed by state or local government.
You get health insurance from the government you work for.
Your health insurance is “non-federal insurance.”
Option 2 – You (or a family member) work for a private company or organization.
Many companies offer health insurance to their employees.
You probably use group health insurance provided by your private employer. It can be fully insured or self-funded.

Option 3 – You (or a family member) are a current or retired federal government employee.
Most federal employees receive health insurance through the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plan.
You purchased your health insurance.
Option 1 – You purchased your health insurance through the health insurance marketplace.
You went to the health insurance marketplace to purchase your insurance. Or, you may have worked with a medical assistant or a medical assistant.
Option 2 – Purchased health insurance through the state marketplace.
Some states operate their marketplaces.
If your state is listed, it has its own Marketplace website that you can use to apply and enroll.

Option 3 – You purchased health insurance directly from a health insurance company.
You may have used an insurance agent or broker.
Get health insurance from a state or federal program
Option 1 – You (or your child) get health insurance through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Medicaid and CHIP provide health insurance to millions of Americans, including people who qualify:
- Low-income adults
- Children
- Pregnant women
- Seniors
- People with disabilities
In some states, Medicaid and CHIP have different names.
Option 2 – Get health insurance through Medicare
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:
- People who are 65 years of age or older.
- People with certain disabilities.People with end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).
Medicare includes traditional (or original) fee-for-service programs and Medicare health plans (such as Medicare Advantage).
Option 3 – You (or a family member) are active or retired military. You can get health insurance through TRICARE.
TRICARE is the military health care system. It provides care to uniformed service members, retirees, and their families.
VA medical facilities are part of the TRICARE network.
